CONSUMER DIRECTED CARE

THIS CAN GET VERY CONFUSING - IF YOU WOULD LIKE US TO HELP YOU THROUGH IT CLICK HERE
The commonwealth government's Living Longer, Living Better program is all about keeping the customer central to the delivery of their care needs. It sure makes a lot of sense. It means seniors and their family have a much greater say in how much involvement they have in the planning of their care. Consumer Directed Care (CDC) gives older people, their families and their carers greater input about the types of care services they receive and the manner in which the services are delivered. Respite Now finds the term 'consumer' quite derogatory as it limits the view we hold of people to purely an 'economically functioning widget'. We are stuck with it when referring to this component of aged care but at least we've put it on record that we think people (especially older Australians)  are not always consumers by choice and it is certainly not to be seen as our primary role in society. We will use the word 'customer' and 'client' in place of 'consumer'. CDC delivers services that allow the customer to have greater control over their own lives by allowing them to make choices about the types of care they want, the specific services they access and how they are delivered.

So whether you want to use a particular care agency or indeed a particular in-home carer or you think some of the money should be spent on getting out more, these are decisions you can now make. Some people even needed to buy a new computer so they could stay in video touch with their daughter so start thinking outside of the box. If you are accessing a level 1, 2, 3 or 4 you home care package you now have the right to be more involved and know where the money is being spent and how you can now benefit more from the package arrangements.

There are four levels of Home Care Packages:
  • Home Care Level 1 – to support people with basic care needs.
  • Home Care Level 2 – to support people with low level care needs.
  • Home Care Level 3 – to support people with intermediate care needs.
  • Home Care Level 4 – to support people with high care needs.
A range of services can be provided under a Home Care Package, including personal care services, support services, clinical services and other services to support a person living at home.

In addition, you might qualify for a package supplement: Dementia, Veterans' and Cognition Supplements
